If you ask someone what Labor Day means, they will probably tell you that is the unofficial end of the summer season that began on Memorial Day. State parks, swimming pools and campgrounds are busy as vacationers take one last advantage of the waning hot season.

Labor Day is a national holiday that is celebrated on the first Monday in September. It is a day that is not devoted to any specific person, place or thing, but was created to honor the contributions that American workers have made to the strength, prosperity and well-being of our country.

The origin of Labor Day can be traced back to 1882 when the Knights of Labor held a celebration and parade in honor of the working class in New York City. Then in 1884, the group held another parade on the first Monday in September. After that, the group passed a resolution to hold all future parades on the first Monday in September and that the day should be designated as Labor Day in honor of all American workers.

In March of 1887, Colorado passed the first state law to designate the day as a legal holiday. Soon after, New York, Massachusetts, and New Jersey passed similar laws. Finally in 1894, Congress passed a law that recognized Labor Day as an official national holiday.

Today, Labor Day is celebrated in The United States, The Canal Zone, Puerto Rico, Canada and the Virgin Islands.
