Adware? Spyware?
In today’s world, protecting ourselves from computer viruses is almost a full time job. In order to keep our computers free of infection, we are required to consistently purchase new programs and download updates to screen for the latest viruses. As insidious as viruses can be (at their worst), they are being threatened by the new kids on the block, spyware and adware.
Spyware and adware are a relatively new concept. In their beginnings, most were knowingly attached to software programs, so that we could download the software free of charge. This was fine. We got a free program and the program delivered targeted advertising based on our web browsing habits.
As time went on spyware and adware became more sophisticated and no longer needed to attach its self to programs. Today spyware and adware can be silently downloaded to your computer, without your knowledge, by browsing the web. You still might be saying to yourself where is the downside.
The downside comes in the fact that everyone wants to know about you. They want to know what sites you are visiting, what items you are buying online and even what keys you are pressing on the keyboard. Every spyware and adware there is reporting something about you to someone else whether you know it or . not. The real downside is that these uninvited guests on your computer
actually are using your computer resources in the form of hard drive space and system ram to carry out their activities. If your computer seems sluggish, it is a safe bet you have been infested with spyware and adware… enter the next big thing, spyware and adware protection.
Programs to protect us from spyware and adware are becoming as prolific as antivirus programs were many years ago. When I started looking for a spyware program, my first spyware eliminator was a freeware program. As time moved on, I moved to a paid program for defense against spyware because it had more features and consistent updates were available from the manufacturer.
Whether you choose to download a program for free or buy a program as I have, you will still get what you need… protection. Ultimately, the most important thing is if you have a personal computer in your home, you need to get one. Spyware and adware are a real threat and are not going to go away anytime soon.
In this case, protection is worth a pound of cure.
