Realizing… While searching for something special for the newsletter, I wandered across this website with poetry and writings about the cost of freedom, but this one especially caught my attention because it is written by a third grader. She understood the cost of freedom. Perhaps from personal experience. I grew up knowing my dad was a Navy veteran who served during the Korean War, but it wasn’t until April 25th, when the honor guard folded the flag that had draped his casket, and taps echoed through the church, that it hit me. If he hadn’t been a survivor, and had been a casualty instead, I wouldn’t be here. I realized the very real price of freedom in a very personal and heart wrenching way. The sacrifice is paid by not just the soldier, but each of their family members, as well as society as a whole. I am blessed to be free and am prouder still of those who bought that freedom for each of us. Cheryl |
